Tuna Salad

If you’re like most people, you’re not getting enough Omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. What I like to do is eat canned tuna once a week. Tuna contains mercury so you should eat it in moderation. I found this website: http://kosherfood.about.com/od/tunafish/qt/tuna.htm that tells you more about the benefits of tuna and gives you guidelines of how much canned tuna you should eat. This is how I like to make my canned tuna:
1 can of tuna, drained
Amount varies to your taste, minced celery, and/ or minced onion
4-6 T mayonnaise
1 T mustard
1-2 hard-boiled egg, minced
Dash of salt and pepper

Combine all ingredients.

I have variation on how I like to eat the tuna. One way, is to make it as a sandwich with toasted bread. I sometime put the tuna over lettuce. Sometimes I boil egg noodles and eat the tuna over the warm noodles.

  1. Our tuna salad is pretty much the same except we like to add some chopped black olive and a little dill pickle relish. It becomes almost gourmet when you stuff a tomato with the tuna salad.

  2. I actually like the idea of eating it over egg noodles, I've never thought about that. Actually kind of reminds me of a tuna salad casserole. Its interesting that you mention the omega 3s. My mom suffers from an auto-immune disorder, which is directly linked to the amount of arachidonic acid within the body. The ratio of Omega 3's to Omega 6's helps stabilize the amount of acid in our bodies. So if possible (I'm not sure how possible it is with tuna) its always best to find wild fed fish. Farmed fish eat too much grain, and the oils in grain are damaging to the balance in our body (since it'll make as much of the acid as it can, and fatty tissues in the fish aggravate the balance of the omega acids). I learned most of this in a book called the Inflammation Nation if you're ever curious about it. Anyway, thanks for the recipe!

  4. I like to add sweet relish to my tuna salad. Then I'll make a sandwich out of it using a toasted bagel, sliced tomatoes and red onions, and a couple of slices of cheddar put in there too. Delicious!

  5. I've heard of the benefits of omega 3s and to eat more fish but the only problem is I really like fish! Although I do enjoy tuna sandwiches. I'm sure to give this a try!
